A Snippet of the History of Cricket in Palmwoods
Palmwoods has always been a cricket-minded town; social games being played before the turn of the century. It is reported that the first game of cricket played in Palmwoods was in the late 1800’s between the railway workers and a team from Cobb & Co.
In abeyance during World War 1, it revived again in 1920. W.S.Collins was chairman of the new club. Others active in its formation were J. Hooper (a popular umpire), Fred Young who played Church Union for Queensland, J.C. Lawrie, the Thoms brothers, Ted Robinson and later Joe Lloyd who represented Queensland with the Postal Institute. A former Queensland premier, Sir Francis Nicklin was a keen player and club supporter back in the 1930’s.
Cricket was played on the present Sportsground. The wicket was of ant-bed with a coir matting. Later, concrete wickets with Kippax matting were used.
Owing to the limited size of this ground, Tommy Briggs (life member, now deceased) donated Briggs’ paddock, now known as Briggs’ Park.
Cows grazed on the paddock when games weren’t being played. This kept the grass down and throwing cow pats kept the fielders entertained during quiet times in play. Cricket games were quite challenging……. as it wasn’t until years later that the council cut back the bank into the hill to provide a level playing field.
World War 2 temporarily put a stop to games of cricket.
After the war, with the help of the Palmwoods Progress Association, the present oval at the Sportsground was built, and a turf wicket – one of the first on the North Coast – put down.
The first fixture match on turf on the Coast was played here between Palmwoods and Maroochydore.

ITS NOT FINISHED !!! The turf wickets are still in need of repair !
This Saturday September 11th there will be another working bee around the grounds to help prepare the wickets for the upcoming Season.
If we can all give up some time to give Robbo a hand our wickets will be a dream to bat on !!
Please come and have some fun with some sods ! Come see Robbo at the Woods.
The Woods needs to be topdressed, and Briggs needs sand dug out and grass planted. All 4 wickets need black soil.
Robbo has explained he can't do it on his own and they won't be ready if its not all completed by this weekend.
He has asked me to inform you, that he will be there everyday from 4.30pm. If by the weekend, its not finished, club members will be desperately needed to finish it off then !!!!!!!!!!!!
